Ali isn’t well. Ali is very sick, and very brave to be up to see us off. Actually, she’ probably so happy to see us leave that it makes her feel better! (kidding) But we do get packed up and on the road pretty much on the schedule we don’t really have (before 10). It has been a great visit for us, and I can’t wait for their visit to be with us for Turkey Day week.
Our drive today takes us through the north side of Yosemite, which is beautiful in its’ own right, although you don’t get to see the valley at all. The traffic is fairly heavy leaving the metropolitan area, and for quite a while (through Stockton), but eventually thins and the drive is pleasant, if a bit long. We only made a few stops along the way. We have been here several times, and just needed a bit of a refresher. It was great seeing Yosemite again.
Once through the park it’s a fairly straight shot south to Big Pine. Big Pine isn’t really our destination, but we looked all over for reservations, and this was as close as we could get to Lone Pine, where you drive up to Mt. Whitney. Mt. Whitney is our real destination – we hiked to the top (at 14,494 ft (4417.8m) it is the tallest peak in the 48 contiguous states) some years ago, and although we may not go to the top again, we like to come back just to see it and to hike a little bit of the trail. Sally-Heath and Ali have been here a couple of times since our hike to the top (sadly, Ali didn’t go on that trip).
Big Pine is a small place, and our motel room is small, but adequate (and really cheap!) We have to drive 42 miles to get to Lone Pine, but that’s a fairly quick drive – no problem. Tonight we ate at Rossi’s, the steak and spaghetti restaurant across the street. We had their meet lasagna special, with salad, bread and ice cream. It was great! And inexpensive. All served family style, and Marge – our server – was really nice. We will be back there. Even if it is not the only restaurant in Big Pine, it certainly is good.
We finished just in time to catch Joe Biden’s acceptance speech. We had seen Bill Clinton just before going to eat. Good, strong speeches.

Goodnight. Just watched Biden's. It's a good excuse to take a break from taxes. I'm hungry. Gonna go get a bite to eat and then force myself back into here. Love you both. Happy hiking. WLC.
