Day 57 - Trinidad to Foster City

Trinidad to Foster City - 362 miles total and 25.7 mpg. Totals for the trip, 9145 miles, 27.0* mpg. Those are the stats.

First I’d like to thank Jake and Woody for taking over yesterday – I really needed a break. Ruff!

Today is a travel day. And there is a lot of ground to cover from here to Foster City! We’re up, packed and out around 9am, which is really good for us. First stop is in Trinidad for breakfast. We promised ourselves eggs, at a place that looks good called The Eatery. It is the third and last restaurant in Trinidad. Breakfast is really good, making it unanimous, all three restaurants in town are pretty good. We load up with $4.45/gal gas and point’er south.

It’s Sunday morning, and traffic is not too bad, although it is California and there are still a zillion people on the road. Starting out on the 101 the scenery is very nice, Redwoods, hills, just pretty – but here 101 is inland all the way to San Francisco, and it varies a lot – sometimes two lanes, sometimes freeway, and everything in between. Doug really wanted to take the scenic route, route 1 down the coast. The weather looked really good, and when we got to the intersection of 101 and 1, we headed west for the coast.

Getting to the coast on route 1 is interesting in itself – the road is as twisty and turnie as any road you have ever driven. It’s a great drive, especially if you are the driver (Doug was). If you’re a passenger, make sure you have ginger or something to keep your stomach in place and right-side-up. (S-H: I didn’t have ginger Woody had eaten it several days ago) The forest is great, and the road is in good shape, it just follows the contours. The motorcycles have a really good time on this road.

Scenic along Route 1
Route 1 truly follows the coast. It is a lot like the Tonto Trail – you drive a lot to advance a little. But the views of the ocean are incredible. And you are often driving on the edge of a very tall (100-400 foot) cliff straight down to water! It is hairy, and it is exciting, and it is beautiful. It’s not fast. But it is worth it. If you have the time and the opportunity, I recommend it. We had good weather most of the way. Only when we got close to San Francisco did the fog settle in and the drizzle start – and that wasn’t bad – you just couldn’t see the ocean or bay very well most of the time. But even then there were some very interesting sights involving the sun, fog and clouds that were just wonderful to see.

Bay Bridge
We drove through the city as though we knew what we were doing. Well, we have been here several times, but still, it’s always a challenge, and if I get off the path, getting back on could be quite a challenge. But this time we drove through, and down 101 to Foster City, and directly to Pete and Ali’s with no problem, no wrong turns. It’s a wonderful thing. Doug greeted us and help us unload, the boys were as excited as they could be to be back in familiar territory, and we felt relaxed, knowing we would be able to settle down a bit and not drive much for a while.(S-H: Woody started wagging his tail about ¼ mile from the house. He knew where he was!)

Doug and Sally-Heath went out to get Chipotle take out, and we pigged out while watching some Olympics. It’s a beautiful evening. And it has been a long day. Time for bed. Goodnight.

F*** you! Now that's just uncalled for! Taunting me like that is cruel. Beyond abuse.

Damnit.
