Day 39 - Hope - kettle Valley Railway

Hope – Kettle Valley Railway, 16 miles total and 19.3 mpg. Totals for the trip, 6789 miles, 27.9* mpg. Those are the stats.

Recovery day. Seems like after a day with lots of driving we take time to recoup. It’s a good thing. We didn’t sleep in too late, but we had muffin and mocha at the Blue Moose, then went on a short motor tour of town – just for orientation. Stopped at the visitor center where a trainee was very helpful. We took the boys for a short walk in the park across from the motel – and noticed the 3 tennis courts were not being used – so we let them loose in the fenced courts, and they ran and ran and ran. They really needed that, as much as I need exercise and sax playing!

A quick stop to pick up some essentials, like dog food, and we were back in the room. Before long it was time for lunch, and we went back to the Blue Moose – mainly to test their soup, which is one of the things they are known for. And the soup was really good, as was my sandwich and smoothy. If you’re ever in Hope, try the Blue Moose – it’s got good food and a comfortable feel – totally informal – college like.

Tressel and Tunnel
We finally picked one of the activities we want to do here – see the Kettle Valley Railway tunnels – and off we go. This turns out to be a short easy hike along the old railroad bed. Basically the story is of the resourcefulness of the engineers in being able to devise this route, and thereby keep the train and goods in Canada, out of US corporation hands. It really was quite a feat. The pictures and interpretative signs tell it well – see Flickr. The river gorge is deep and impressive, there is a lot of water passing through, it’s just rugged and beautiful. ( S-H: We could have hiked another 4 k, one way but for some reason turned back)

Stream - Salmon spawning
It was a quick hike, so on the short drive back to town we stopped by another very easy trail along a stream where salmon will be spawning later in the year. It’s a beautiful area as well, with several streams, all merging and merging with the river. No salmon – too early.

We got back to the room, it was unusually early for us, and we crashed. Must have needed a nap, because we sure took one (or four). Woke up in time for supper, and decided to try Asian – a restaurant called Kan Yon – I’m sure that was an accident, not intentional. Anyway, it was good, inexpensive, and we had enough left over for tomorrow night!

That’s about it. A really quiet, slow day. Probably the next couple of days in Hope will be similar – we’re not going to try to do too much. Tomorrow, if the weather holds, we plan to take a tram over a really impressive canyon. That should be a bit exciting!
